stone options & sourcing

Stone selection is a meaningful part of the custom engagement ring design process.

At West of Fourth, care is taken to source stones that feel distinctive and personal. Rather than relying on pre-stocked inventory, stones are sourced individually based on design, setting, and personal preference, with clear guidance throughout.

Clients are supported through the differences between stones with clarity and education, so every choice feels informed and confident.

Diamonds
Natural and lab-grown diamonds are available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and qualities. While classic cuts are always available, many clients are drawn to antique and uncommon cuts such as rose cuts, old mine cuts, and other vintage-inspired shapes that offer a softer, more distinctive character.

Coloured Gemstones
Sapphires (including Montana sapphires), spinel, emerald, and other fine coloured gemstones selected for colour, character, and individuality.

Alternative Stones
Salt-and-pepper diamonds, black diamonds, and other non-traditional options for clients seeking something distinctive.

Existing or Heirloom Stones
Existing stones can often be incorporated into a new design. Heirloom diamonds and gemstones are carefully assessed and thoughtfully reused, allowing meaningful pieces to be reimagined in a new setting.

Designed With Experience and intention

West of Fourth is led by Melissa Mitchell, a Calgary-based custom jewellery designer with over a decade of experience in bespoke design and gemstone sourcing. Melissa holds Graduate Diamonds, Coloured Stones, and Applied Jewellery Professional (AJP) diplomas from the Gemological Institute of America.

Each project is guided personally from consultation through completion, ensuring a consistent, thoughtful experience from start to finish.
